Employers must certify that their operators have been trained and evaluated as required by law (per OSHA 1910.178).
- Instructor must be trained, knowledgeable and experienced
- Each operator must receive classroom and hands-on training
- Training must be site specific to address work place hazards
- Training must be truck specific (each type of equipment operated) to address operating and safety requirements
- All operators must be evaluated at least every three years
- Refresher/remedial training must be conducted after a near miss, an accident, or unsafe operation has been observed
- Training records (to be retained) must include: certifications, course outline, training materials and name/address of instructor
- Training must include the similarities and differences between forklifts and automobiles, explanation of the center of gravity, stability and daily inspections
