Employers must certify that their operators have been trained and evaluated as required by law (per OSHA 1910.178).

• Instructor must be trained, knowledgeable and experienced
• Each operator must receive classroom and hands-on training
• Training must be site specific to address work place hazards
• Training must be truck specific (each type of equipment operated) to address operating and safety requirements
• All operators must be evaluated at least every three years
• Refresher/remedial training must be conducted after a near miss, an accident, or unsafe operation has been observed
• Training records (to be retained) must include: certifications, course outline, training materials and name/address of instructor
• Training must include the similarities and differences between forklifts and automobiles, explanation of the center of gravity, stability and daily inspections
